Lets talk a little about Jaguars manual transmissions. There are (3) basic models. The 4 speed non synchronized, the 4 speed synchronized, and the 4 speed synchronized with electric overdrive. Each of these models, in their time, was quite innovative, but by today's standards, somewhat cumbersome. Some of our customers enjoy the difficult shifting and feel of the early non syncro box. They claim, "you can get used to it and it works just fine." For those, we offer a complete rebuilding service to keep that original feel. But for those who prefer to modernize, we offer (2) options. We can modify the 4 speed syncro box to fit either the early XKE I or the XK cars, or we can also fit a very efficient 5 speed fully synchronized transmission, the JT5. The 4 speed syncro box is a great transmission. It shifts smoothly and is geared nicely. I only have 3 problems with its performance. First, (and it's not a problem if you live in a warmer climate) the transmission uses a standard heavy weight oil, if it's cold outside, it' very tight to shift until the transmission warms up. Second, the shift pattern is little wide and the throw is little too long, but if you've never driven any others, then it feels pretty good. Third, and the reason we started looking around for alternatives is fourth gear just wasn't enough. First, second, and third gears seemed fine but when you got to fourth, the fun was over and you really weren't going that fast. We never wanted to over stress our engines, and take them beyond "redline" so we had to be satisfied with "looking cool" and backing off on the throttle. Aside from that, with the small gas tank we have, - poor mileage was not a plus. With the JT5 5 speed transmission, we have found the perfect match. Now you can "pick up the pace" if you choose or sit back, relax, and enjoy some "real" feel economy for that road trip. (Yes, you read it correctly. "Road Trip"). As you look through our website, you'll see we've killed all the bugs that used to scare you when you heard the words, ROAD TRIP. You no longer have to be 18 years old, and not care if you ever make it back or at least on time - give or take a month or two. Now you can act like a teenager, but actually be responsible and return on time, if you choose.
We fit the JT5 into MK's, XK's, and XKE's. There are no-extreme modifications
- o the only one who knows is you! You get the comfort and reliability that
you need without re-designing the entire car. The transmission uses a light
weight oil, so it always shifts smoothly. The shift pattern is tight and precise.
He throw is short and accurate , and 5th gear is a dream come true. The shifter
is exactly where I was only with 5 speeds instead of 4. We use an electronic
speedometer (XKE I & II) so no more broken speedo cables and angle drives
and it's adjustable for accuracy. Just plain a pleasure to drive. Imagine
5th gear at 60 mph. is only 1800 rpms, as compared to 3000 rpms with the factory
4 speed. Either your Jag will finally get some real fuel economy or high speed
"passing" is no longer just a dream. With our modified engines,
trick suspension, and upgraded wheel and tire packages, I've had the privilege
of experimenting with both sides of the coin. The JT5 is the only option for
extreme performance. I've had the experience many times of cruising with traffic
at 40mph. in 4th gear, waiting for an open spot, downshifting to third accelerating
to 5000 rpms, shifting to 4th and then laughing so hard because I'm already
10 cars ahead, and I still have another gear, 5th, WOW! Nothing like it! I
have so many great stories and races, but you'll just have to wait for the
book.
