Yes, of course you can have an efficient air conditioning system in your vintage Jaguar. We can, and have installed many systems in XKE”s and MK II”s.
In the XKE the unit fits nicely under the dash on the right hand side above the passengers knees. This unit provides plenty of cold air and does not affect the comfort of your passenger. The A/C unit is small but efficient. The air conditioning compressor mounts in front of the engine and requires some custom made brackets. We have also re-designed the radiator and eliminated the header tank for compression clearance. The air conditioning system is modern and efficient, and uses the environmentally friendly 134A gas. With today’s modern rotary style compressors there isn’t the old “drag” or reduction in rpm’s that we’ve all had to get used to, it’s very smooth and quiet.
With the MK II’s, you have the choice of the unit being mounted on the right side (as with the XKE) or we can mount it under the rear deck and put the unit in the boot. This keeps the dash area looking a cleaner. (especially with the beautiful wood dash) The rear unit has vents that push the air forward and cool the entire car almost immediately – similar to the central air conditioning in your home.
Either unit works very well – obviously the rear unit requires more modification to install. The air conditioning compressor on the MK II mounts above the generator or below the alternator. We offer many other packages for the MK II accompanying air conditioning. We can install air conditioning with a Hi powered alternator, and power rack and pinion, and steering. (Our most desired package.) With all air conditioning systems we also install a blower fan, which works automatically with the compressor to add extra cooling. As you might expect some packages are more extensive than others and some combinations won’t work together. Let us know what you’d like us to do, and let us make it happen.
