CONVERTIBLE TOPS: XKE
I don't think we've ever seen a XKE Jaguar convertible top frame that really fits the car. Lots of great tops, but they usually leak "air" upfront and the side windows rarely ever come close to the rubber. We have developed a routine with all our E-type roadster recreation projects, which guarantee's success every time.
First we disassemble the top and frame. Then we acid dip the steel frame to remove the rust. We then reassemble the frame and fit it to the car. We replace the front wood bow and fit the wood exactly to the contour of the front windscreen. We also replace the rear wood at the body (XKE I) where the back of the canvas attaches. We then roll up the side windows and install some temporary seals and bend, twist, heat, and adjust the frame to meet with the seals on the sides. After we have a good fit at the front and both side windows gently touch the side seals, we remove the top frame, disassemble it and powder coat it. When we reassemble the frame we use all new chrome hardware and the correct brass washers and a wonderful canvas top which will fit great and last for years. We eliminate the common water and air leaks as well as gives you a gorgeous cosmetic appearance. We dedicate approximately 40 to 50 hours to making sure it's the way it was designed to be, but wasn't!
